22 best armchairs to curl up in
Featured in this article
You’ll thank yourself for buying a really great armchair, as it will become a cosy place to retreat to on a cold morning, a welcoming spot on a sunny afternoon and a place of sanctuary in the evening. When it comes to living room furniture, we probably all start off with the sofa, but there's something about an attractively upholstered armchair that really ties a living room together. If you have room for one or two armchairs next to or opposite your sofa, it also makes hosting friends and family in your sitting room much more comfortable.

What is the best style of armchair?
It is difficult to definitively decide what the best type of armchair is. So, it is better to think about what would be the perfect armchair for you. There are many different types of armchair, some are deep and cavernous: these are lovely to curl up in. A high, enveloping back is ideal for supporting your head while watching TV, reading or perhaps dozing off in your armchair, whereas low arms and a shorter, wider back tend to create more of an open look. Some are more upright and formal in design: these are great for game nights or evenings spent playing cards as they look stylish whilst keeping you in comfort. Some have castors so they can easily be wheeled around: these are good in open plan areas where you may like to arrange and rearrange at will. Before you purchase your chair of choice, make sure to consider how you plan on using your armchair. This will ensure you can select the best armchair for your needs.
How should I place an armchair?
We like them paired and facing the sofa, or tucked into a corner for a comfy reading nook. Why not use this lounge chair as a vehicle for colour, pattern, or, if you are of a more modernist bent, arresting forms and shapes? The armchair is the perfect place to test out an array of styles, patterns and colours. Don't confine an armchair or accent chair to the living room though – pop one in a cosy corner of your bedroom for some peace and quiet, or if you have a study or dressing room then they provide a place for contemplation.
