1/13Tella Thera
You can immediately feel when you’ve walked into an independent hotel created by a passionate owner who has been involved with every detail – down to the doorknobs, coasters and even light bulbs. Usually, they’ve taken a leap of faith to set up their first hotel, possibly changing careers and answering a calling they just couldn’t shut out. The owner of Tella Thera, on the olive-dotted hills above Kissamos, would agree with me that it takes just the right amount of insanity to make your own hotel.
The result here is an architecturally stunning yet quietly understated hotel that is unlike anywhere else on this vast island. Tella Thera is totally discreet from the road that winds beneath it as you drive up, yet vividly coloured once you arrive, with details in the interiors, specially made wooden furnishings and arched windows, doors and walkways. Even the built-in wardrobes remain devoted to this curved theme, created from bent wood.
The pool is the social anchor of the hotel, where loungers and a restaurant a few steps above are always alive with guests – but never too many. The food menu at Anemoia is driven by Cretan and Greek recipes with a zero-waste approach, though with a completely modern spin, so ingredients are repurposed and paired inventively.
Staying by the sea is nice, but up here in the mountains, there’s a whole different view to take in, and perhaps a more authentic entry into Cretan life.
2/13Amirandes
Greek filoxenia – hospitality – is something the country has long been known for, particularly among the family-run businesses that make up so much of its food and tourism industry, from tavernas and olive-oil producers to hotels. Grecotel is a particularly good example. Founded by the Daskalantonakis family, whose roots are in Rethymno, the group has grown over five decades from its first Cretan hotel into a family-owned collection of around 40 hotels and resorts across Greece, now entering its third generation.
If Greeks are known for their hospitality, Cretans are particularly proud of taking it to another level. At Amirandes, on the northern coast just outside Heraklion, that generosity is everywhere. It is there in the food, naturally, but also in the way the resort seems determined to make life easy for its guests: from long meals of oven-roasted lamb, moussaka and dolmadakia washed down with raki at taverna-style Xasteria to seafood, Asian and Mediterranean cooking elsewhere across the resort’s nine restaurants and bars.
At Minotaur, dinner comes with an unexpected cultural spin: an exceptional collection of original Picasso ceramics, inspired by the artist’s fascination with the mythical Minotaur, on display at the entrance. It is a pairing that makes sense here, with Knossos – and its own Minotaur legend – just a short drive away.
The architecture follows the same thread. Inspired by the palaces of ancient Crete, Amirandes is a modern interpretation of Minoan architecture, built around water, with lagoons, pools and the sea appearing at every turn. Whitewashed walls, stone arches and enormous traditional pitharia – large ceramic vessels – give the resort a distinctive sense of place, while its scale and grandeur make it feel more like a contemporary palace than a conventional beach resort.
But perhaps the most appealing thing about Amirandes is that, for all its scale, it doesn’t seem interested in showing off. There is a refreshing lack of technological fussiness: rooms are intuitive rather than over-engineered, with proper light switches, generous baths rather than just the newest model of rain showers and everything arranged more or less exactly where you want it to be. In a hotel culture increasingly obsessed with the latest gadgets, the biggest pools and the most elaborate spas, this simplicity feels luxurious in itself. That is not to say there isn’t plenty here.
Be sure to pay a visit to Knossos and Heraklion’s museums, or take part in pottery classes back at the resort.
3/13IKOS Kissamos
On arrival at the new IKOS Kissamos, you are immediately taken by the sheer scale of it all. The lobby area, with its towering ceiling and circular seating banquette built around an olive tree, sets the tone. Jaw-dropping architecture and beauty remain at every turn as you walk through the resort and spend the next few days discovering its many restaurants, dedicated beaches and pools – which always consider the balance between families and adults who want more peace and quiet.
Spread across more than 53 acres on Kissamos Bay, this is Ikos’s first hotel in Crete and its largest undertaking yet, with 414 rooms, suites and bungalows arranged in low-rise clusters across the landscape. Rather than one vast resort building, it feels more like a collection of small Cretan villages, linked by paths through newly planted gardens and fragrant herbs, each with its own pool and little pockets of privacy.
Despite the fact that the hotel only opened this summer, the gardens are in full bloom, and appear all around the resort in front of rooms, around restaurants and in open spaces for socialising. They help make it all feel more intimate without needing to add any artificial walls. Everything leads eventually towards the long sweep of sandy beach.
And then there is the food. Ikos has built its reputation around making all-inclusive feel more sophisticated than the phrase might suggest, and Kissamos takes that idea further with seven restaurants and menus overseen by culinary talents. At Kriti, Michelin-starred chef Ettore Botrini turns his attention to the food of Crete, working with local ingredients and traditional recipes but giving them a more refined, contemporary treatment. The great luxury of Ikos Kissamos, though, is its ease. Everything is taken care of, from the restaurants and pools to the generous list of activities, but there is still enough space to disappear for the afternoon. For those who normally recoil from the idea of an all-inclusive holiday, this may well be the one to change your mind.

One of the first things you will notice at Daios Cove is the funicular – transporting guests up and down the cliffside between the resort and the sea like a ski lift. It is a unique sight in Greece, and a rather thrilling way to arrive – descending towards the sea with the whole cove gradually revealing itself as you go. There’s an amusement-park-like quality to staying here and getting onto the funicular with other guests, getting off at different levels for restaurants, pools, activities and the beach.
Built into a private cove on Crete’s north-eastern coast, about an hour’s drive from Heraklion Airport, the resort appears to tumble down the hillside towards a small, sheltered bay, with rooms scattered between the rocky landscape. From almost everywhere, the sea is the view, and the architecture follows the natural contours of the steep hillside rather than competing with it, while terraces, gardens and pathways connect everything. It is a large resort, but you wouldn’t know it thanks to this clever arrangement. Updates to the rooms and public areas, including the new KĒPOS Wellness Centre, are underway, with much already completed, bringing this classic family resort into its next chapter.

Once a low-key fishing village, Elounda, on Crete's eastern coast, is now home to some of the island's fanciest resorts – and is also known for its vast natural beauty as the area faces the perfectly turquoise Mirabello Bay and the lush Sitia Mountains in the distance. Five-star Elounda Mare, sitting on its own 300m of private coastline with a Blue Flag-awarded sandy beach, feels like a little village of craggy luxury villas rather than a splashy hotel and is an ideal escape for foodies wanting some private luxury.
Part of a trio of hotels including the beautiful, larger and even more family-friendly Elounda Peninsula and the slightly more affordable Porto Elounda, Elounda Mare sits a little out of the way of the other two – connected by a 10-minute glamorous boat journey or buggy ride. The trio share a few impressive amenities, including the ginormous Six Senses Spa and a challenging hillside golf course.
