A budget pick from Silentnight, a double is normally just £349, but with a hefty 25% discount, you save £87. It's just 15cm deep, so certainly not as luxurious as some of our choices, but if you're not looking to go near the £1,000 mark (and many top mattresses cost over and above this), it's a great pick. So we'll be honest - any chance to get any kind of discount on one is so worth it. Specifically made for pressure relief, the Pro mattress range comes in three variations (all of which have discounts), varying in depth and adding in extra layers of comfort as you move from the Pro (the most affordable in the range) to the Pro Luxe (the most luxury offering). The Pro Plus is a bestseller. And to make sure you never overheat, which is a common concern with memory foam, Tempur has now also incorporated a SmartCool cover, absorbing excess body heat and keeping you perfectly comfortable overnight.

How do we find the best mattress deals?

Here at House & Garden we're constantly writing about mattresses, whether it's reviewing the latest releases or collating guides to the best cheap mattresses, mattresses for side sleepers, or hypoallergenic mattresses. This means that we are also some of the first ones to hear about, or spot, the best Black Friday mattress deals. We're always tracking prices at the brands we cover, so keep an eye on this page if you want to be the first to shop the sale.

How do we test mattresses?

As experts in all things sleep, our editors have been writing about mattresses for years, with a deep knowledge of everything you should look for when shopping for a new one, as well as what kind of mattress is best for every sleeper. Each mattress in this guide has been tried and tested by one of our team well in advance of us including it in our guides, so you can trust that all of our recommendations here are well worth shopping and investing in.

Is Black Friday a good time to buy a mattress?

Black Friday is one of the best times of the year to buy a mattress at a discount. From here, you can look onwards to the Boxing Day sales and January discounts but as we enter a new year, many prices will evolve and change. Our best advice would be to shop as soon as you see a good deal on a mattress you want. But fear not - as is evident from our guide, which is regularly updated, there are countless offers on mattresses all through the year. In fact, many mattresses are on sale more than they're full price.

Which mattress brands offer deals?

Many of our favourite furniture shops and online retailers, like John Lewis & Partners and Amazon, tend to offer up great discounts on mattresses during seasonal sales. Bed-in-a-box brands, such as Emma, Simba Sleep and Dusk, have really taken the mattress industry up a notch or two, and their products are frequently on sale year-round. While many of them are online only, we've written about them extensively (indeed, some of the team sleep very soundly night after night on their Emma and Dusk mattresses), and most offer a generous sleep trial and free delivery. So if it's not for you, you can sleep soundly knowing you're able to return it and get a full refund.

Lots of the bed-in-a-box brands also do very good bundle bedding deals with their pillows, mattress toppers and duvets too, so do consider these offers if you're looking for more than one item. They also sell bed frames, so it could be a one-stop shop.

How to shop for the best mattress deals?

Most brands have very wide size offerings, including UK and EU, ranging from small singles and small doubles, up to king size, to super king size and even emperor. While reliable brands such as Silentnight are at the more affordable end of the scale, plenty of mattress brands have luxury and premium mattress offerings too, such as Sealy and Tempur, and we're seeing more and more eco friendly options too, such as bamboo mattresses. Before you start looking for the best deals, first determine exactly what you want and need from a mattress. Keep an eye on prices while browsing, see how they fluctuate over time, and compare the discount percentages offered by each retailer to determine what feels like a coup.

Firmness is a big consideration too. This is measured on a scale which ranges from medium soft (good for side sleepers) to medium firm (back sleepers, as well as all positions) and firm (stomach sleepers). When it comes to what’s inside, dispel any myths about memory foam making you hot and sweaty. Modern foam incorporates effective temperature-regulating qualities. Pocket sprung mattresses are made differently now too, helping to distribute weight evenly.
